Its goal is to appeal to a broad audience while offering insight into the diverse and individualistic qualities that Japanese literature has cultivated over the past century. The adaptations feature works by Higuchi Ichiyō (Takekurabe), Mori Ōgai (The Dancing Girl), Natsume Sōseki (Botchan), Kawabata Yasunari (The Izu Dancer) – the 1968 Nobel laureate – and Mishima Yukio (The Sound of Waves).
