Description

In contemporary society, most people are guided and carried forward by forces that resemble a game of Sugoroku, an old board game in which players roll dice and move along a predetermined path. The earliest guides are parents. This graduate work by Tanaka Miki follows a boy as he grows while being carried along by his parents in this figurative Sugoroku. The family embodies the roles of the game: the father rolls the dice, the mother lifts the boy onto the board, and he continues his journey largely passively. The narrative examines how long this family‑driven Sugoroku can last, ultimately reaching a moment when the boy chooses to sever his ties with his family. The film is a graduate thesis from the Department of Animation at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts.
