In the year 2201, the Yamato returns from the devastating battle against Emperor Zordar and the Comet Empire. After being released from the hospital, Sanada, Aihara, and Shima travel to Okita's memorial to honor the fallen crew members. There, they meet Tokugawa’s son Tasuke, who reveals that he intends to join the crew upon graduating from cadet school. On the day of his graduation, Tasuke unintentionally capsizes a boat carrying new cadets, as everyone is distracted by gazing at the Yamato and fails to pay attention to their surroundings. During launch, the ship encounters trouble when the new engine crew mistakenly activates the wrong switches, causing a stall. Despite these setbacks, the Yamato sets out on what should have been a straightforward training mission.
