Description
In 1940, Kayoko is a first‑grade student who is a bit of a crybaby, a fact that those around her know well. She delights in playing with friends, singing schoolyard chants, and occasionally having fun with her three older brothers. With her mother pregnant, Kayoko looks forward to becoming a big sister, though she only partially understands the responsibility that may come with it. As the war effort grows, she feels it natural to be patriotic and support her country, even going so far as to donate her beloved doll, materials from which could help build explosives.
