In “Why,” a boxing ring transforms into an abstract animation stage, where the punches thrown during the match gradually merge with the halftone dots of reprographics until the two become indistinguishable. Tanaami filmed the bout with a Motordrive camera, produced two thousand offset prints, and then rephotographed each one. He says the work was inspired by the experience of watching a boxing match on television, only to discover that the newspaper print the next morning better captured the sport’s exhilaration.
