Based on a picture book recounting the 2004 Chuuetsu earthquake in Niigata prefecture, the story follows Mari and her three newborn puppies. When the quake hits Yamakoshi Village, their home collapses and the elderly owner becomes trapped under the debris. Mari frees herself from her chain and encourages the old man, helping him escape until rescuers arrive. Although the man is eventually rescued, he is unable to care for the puppies, leaving them in the abandoned village. The question remains: can Mari and the pups survive on their own?
