Description

The 1991 release date can be misleading. The symphonic poem that underpins the series actually began as music composed by Isao Tomita for Jungle Emperor in 1965. Tomita expanded this score into a long-form work that tells a narrative by itself, a form known as a symphonic or tone poem, which composers of the late Romantic era employed. In this case, music originally created to enhance visual storytelling becomes the story teller. Tomita’s symphonic poem was recorded in the mid‑1960s and issued on LP in Japan, with multiple releases, and later on CD. In 1991, Tezuka Productions reversed the process, producing new animation to illustrate the symphonic poem. The resulting story essentially follows the plot of the first Kimba episode.
