After the success of Operation Odessa, the Earth Federation sends increasingly large numbers of troops to Earth to liberate it from the Principality of Zeon. As Zeonic forces retreat into the unknown depths of the planet, the Earth Federation Ground Force must track them down and eliminate the remaining threat. Ensign Shiro Amada is chosen to lead the 08th Mobile Suit Team, commanding a group of Ground Type Gundams into combat. His mission is twofold: distract the enemy and uncover a mysterious new Zeon weapon. However, his resolve is tested when he falls in love with Zeon pilot Aina Sahalin.
