Description
Mofa Ya Ma follows young DouDou, who arrives at her grandmother’s house on the first day of the seventh lunar month, the ghost month, in the Chinese calendar. As the host gate opens, Grandma conducts Taoist rites to honor the deceased and communicate with spirits. One day DouDou accidentally releases a devil from an urn; the mischievous spirit possesses a sleepy house cat and convinces DouDou that applying Grandma’s tears to her eyelids will let her see invisible friends. Unaware of the devil’s true intention, to devour all the ghosts, the story unfolds in a style reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki’s “My Neighbour Totoro,” while firmly rooted in Taiwanese culture.
