On January 16, 1995, Tsuyoshi Takahashi, a diligent student at Shiokaze Elementary, is driven solely by a desire for excellent grades. In his pursuit of perfection, he often ignores the people around him. Miho, a fellow classmate, wishes he would appreciate those people more, while Kazu, a sickly and bedridden classmate who lives nearby, also observes Tsuyoshi's preoccupation. The next day, January 17, the Kobe/Hyogo-Nanbu earthquake strikes, measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale and becoming the largest quake to hit Japan since the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. It kills more than 6,000 people and leaves around 300,000 homeless. In the aftermath, Tsuyoshi’s priorities shift; he must confront the death of a friend while helping another to cope, learning to value those around him.
